A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

These Hand-Painted Converse Kicks Help Preserve Indigenous Mexican Culture

It's safe to say Converse really know what they're doing. Apart from being hip and having amazing designs, the Boston-based brand is also interested in supporting different social initiatives. And this time, it's Pintando Pasos' turn.
Pintando Pasos is a Mexican organization that seeks to preserve Mixtec culture and talent. As its website explains:
"Artisans are safekeepers of culture. Their work reflects years and years of learning and cosmovision. It is our duty to protect the ancestral knowledge of our peoples and value every piece of art in each Mexican community."
Through Pintando Pasos, the Mixtec culture is shared, valued and passed, as craftsmen in Oaxaca have the opportunity to share their millenary designs with the rest of the world through Converse's intervention.

When buying one of these models, you will not only be wearing a piece of Mexico on your feet – you will also be supporting these indigenous communities, as 100% of the sale is destined to Grabadores Mixtecos Unidos A.C., a group of Mixtec artisans from a town called Pinotepa de Don Luis in Oaxaca.
Each pair of sneakers is hand-painted; hence, every design is unique.
If you are into fashion and you love supporting good causes, then these Converse models are a MUST. The only small detail is that you'll have to travel to Mexico to get them... Or maybe have someone bring them to you.
